Girls finish season on a high in Napier

The Petone FC Girls Only 13th Grade Settlers team rounded off a highly successful season with an away trip to Napier last weekend. The team had been looking to compete against some other girls’ teams from outside the region and approached Napier’s Marist club, who were keen to take up the opportunity.

“The team were fantastic, both on and off the field”, according to coach Craig Weir. “Although the girls went down 3-1, it was a hard-fought match with Petone taking the lead 1-0 early on through a goal to Gabe Claridge. Napier Marist evened the score soon after, and then went ahead 2-1 with a cannon from outside the box. The Settlers were unable to convert a few of their chances and Marist sealed the win with their final goal coming late in the second half.”

“Napier Marist were a quality team and were a lot taller than our side”, said Craig.

The girls performed well playing on the grass pitch at Park Island, something they were not used to after playing all of their games this season on turf.

Aleesha Heywood, Central Football’s Women’s Development Officer was on hand to referee the game and also selected the players of the day, which went to Petone’s Grace Lawry, Aspen Davis and Kate Quin.

A large group of supporters accompanied the team to Napier over the weekend which made it a great way to end the season, according to Craig. The girls are looking forward to repaying the hospitality shown to them when Napier Marist come to Wellington for a preseason match early next year.

The team would also like to thank everyone who supported them at their bake sale fundraiser during the junior prizegiving weekend.
