Congratulations to our newest members of the 1st Team Centurions Club

17 May 2013   Jeff Bell   Honours

Thanks to everyone who supported our Old Timers’ Day last Saturday. The Clubrooms were full for most of the afternoon and the entertainment later in the evening capped off a great day. It was a pleasure to see tankards presented to five former players among those who achieved 100 or more 1st team league games many years ago. This was made possible by the thorough research completed by John Bradbury during the recent Honours Board project. He was able to ascertain that Alan Kearton, John Ryan, Bob Walley, Tony Evans, John Rook and Jack Shaw had played 100 games, (in some cases well over 100) when including matches before the Central League commenced in 1968. An engraved tankard was presented to each player except Tony Evans, who will receive his on another occasion, as has been the tradition for this achievement since 1976.

According to the records we have been able to put together to arrive at the number of appearances for the new Centurions:

Alan Kearton made his 1st team debut on 14 April 1956 v Upper Hutt United at Petone Rec. and scored on debut. He went on to play his 100th game for the 1st team on 29 May 1965 and to play over 150 games. We have a record of him scoring 9 goals – primarily defender.

John Ryan made his 1st team debut on 22 May 1954 against Hospital (now Western Suburbs) at the Basin Reserve. He went on to play his 100th game for the 1st team on 30 April 1966 and to play over 160 league games. We have records of him scoring 61 league goals.

Bob Walley made his 1st team debut on 6 July 1957 v Diamonds at the Basin Reserve. He went on to play his 100th game on 15 July 1967 and to play over 190 1st team league games. We have records of him scoring 11 screamers!

Tony Evans made his 1st team league debut on 13 April 1957 against Seatoun at Seatoun Park. He went on to play his 100th game on 6 April 1968, just before the Wahine Storm and to play over 152 games. We have records of Tony scoring 46 goals, but playing most of his career as a centre half.

John Rook made his 1st team debut on 6 August 1960 against Miramar Rangers at the Basin Reserve. He went on to play his 100th game on 19 July 1969 and to play over 121 games. We have records of John scoring 72 goals.

Jack Shaw made his 1st team league debut on 7 May 1966 against Diamond. He went on to play 102 games, reaching his 100th on 31 May 1975. He played more than 102 games and as a penalty-taking defender scored 11 league goals.
