Petone Settlers on a roll

Petone football finished the season with impressive results at the McCartney Tournament in Taupo last weekend, including a win by the 11th grade Settlers.

The tournament is one of the largest in the North Island with over 100 teams competing in 10 age groups.

Petone’s 11th grade Settlers competed against clubs and academies from Wellington, Hamilton, Taupo and Auckland, playing seven games over the two days of the tournament.

"It is a great achievement for the team", club junior chairman Richard Arkinstall said. "To come away with the win in their pool was very rewarding for them and the club".

It was the team’s third tournament success this season, having won their division in the local Wynton Rufer tournament in May and also the Douglas Villa tournament in September.

"The boys played their hearts out, conceding only two goals," coach Debbie Kowalczyk said.

The Taupo win tops off a year of tournament successes for Petone, including grades 9, 10 and 11 winning their divisions at the Douglas Villa tournament, and the 10th grade girls' team winning at the Wellington United tournament in September.

"Despite the tournaments being long days for the players, they really enjoy the experience and the challenge", Arkinstall said.
