Western Suburbs Football Fling 2013

11 September 2013   Jeff Bell   Junior News

Over the weekend of 7 & 8 September, 13 Petone FC teams took part in the Western Suburbs Football Fling 2013, held at Endeavour Park in Whitby. The tournament attracted over 900 children from around the Wellington region, with grades 7-10 playing on Saturday and grades 11 and 12 on Sunday.

The weekend’s weather managed to play its part and some fabulous football was played across all the grades. Congratulations to the 8th grade Petone Blue team, coached by Deb Kowalczyk, who took out their final on Saturday beating North Wellington Incredibles 3-0.

Each grade was broken into two groups and after seven games, the winner from each group played off in the final. It was a long day for all the players and supporters – but enjoyable nonetheless.

On Sunday the 11th grade Petone Blue team went through their group unbeaten and came up against Karori United in the final. After a tense 25 minutes of football the score was 0-0 at full time and the teams headed straight into a penalty shootout. Despite some amazing penalties and a fabulous save by the Petone goalkeeper, Petone were defeated.

Well done to all the players who competed over the weekend, it was great to see Petone FC represented so well with at least two teams in each grade. Special congratulations also go to the following players who won Golden Boot or were voted Most Valuable Player by the opposition:

- 7th Grade MVP: Luke Stoupe

- 9th Grade Golden Boot: Lucas Jelley

- 12th Grade Golden Boot: Jack Healy

The next junior tournament is at Douglas Villa in Masterton over the weekend of 21/22 September.
